Four things worth making this season.

Warm, simple, and each one tied to the history above rather than just seasonal decor.

Spiced Harvest Cider

Simmer apple cider with cinnamon sticks, a few cloves, a split vanilla bean, and orange peel for 20 minutes on low heat. Serve warm — easy to make non-alcoholic or add a splash of dark rum or bourbon for an adult version.

Simple Soul Cakes

A small, round spiced cake (traditionally marked with a cross, given to “soulers” in exchange for prayers for the dead — see The Real History of Trick-or-Treating). Base: flour, butter, sugar, a beaten egg, mixed spice, currants, a splash of milk to bind — rolled, cut into rounds, baked until golden.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Rinse and dry the seeds from your carved pumpkin, toss with olive oil and salt (or smoked paprika), roast at 300°F/150°C for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until crisp. The most direct “waste nothing” ritual of the whole season.

Ancestor Supper Plate

Not a recipe so much as a practice: setting aside a small plate of a dish that meant something to someone you've lost — their favorite food, something they used to make — as part of a Samhain/Halloween ancestor observance. Pairs naturally with the ancestor remembrance on the Spells page.
